Our old frontier is closed. The newly independent Russian media idealized America and endorsed shock therapy for the economy. Now that has been the fashion of the frontier in every age and every land of all the world.
The United States has, today, all the technology needed to send humans to Mars. Also, the American tradition of competition and self-betterment was born on the frontier and continues in America even today.
Compared to these changes, the technological innovations from to the present are insignificant. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it.
But, in its broadest significance, the frontier knows no country. People who had no role in the old society could define their role in the new. But, the frontiersmen were the true dreamers of the nation.
Does this not recall the old times of free range in the American West? The frontier had no need for standing armies, established churches, aristocrats or nobles, nor for landed gentry who controlled most of the land and charged heavy rents.
Adventure and the frontier are one and inseparable.

The technological capabilities achieved during the 20th century would dwarf the expectations of any observer from the 19th, exceed the dreams of one from the 18th, and appear outright magical to someone from the 17th century.

The fact that Mars can be settled and altered defines it as the New World that can create the basis for a positive future for terrestrial humanity for the next several centuries.
